Nigeria’s Defence Minister Christopher Musa has clarified that American troops stationed in the country are operating strictly in training and advisory roles, stressing that they do not command Nigerian military operations.

Speaking during the first Monthly Operational Briefing at the defence ministry in Abuja, Musa said the United States Armed Forces presence is limited to providing assistance and advice. He emphasized that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain fully in charge of all operations within the country.

According to Musa’s media adviser Timothy Antigha, the minister used the meeting to review ongoing military campaigns, assess national security threats, and provide strategic direction to the armed services. Musa also praised Nigerian troops for their professionalism and resilience while reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to improving troop welfare and operational effectiveness.

The clarification comes after the United States deployed ground personnel to Nigeria earlier this year under a new security cooperation framework between United States and Nigeria.

The agreement followed Washington’s decision under President Donald Trump to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious freedom issues. Trump had previously warned that the U.S. could take stronger action against militant groups responsible for attacks on Christian communities.

In December, U.S. forces carried out airstrikes against militant targets in Bauni Forest in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

However, the Nigerian government has consistently rejected allegations that Christians face systemic persecution in the country.
